The practice of ceramics can be tracked all the way back to thousands of years and it has come a long way blooming from the basic form of pot making into extravagant pieces. Ceramics is the more artistic form of pottery because it is the process of making clay based products such as pots and other forms of art by applying heat into it in order to harden and set the shape of the product. Because of this, the material of clay can also be transformed into infinite possibilities due to the creativity of artists.
Ceramics use clay as the main ingredient and this is naturally formed in various parts of the world. It consists of fine-grained particles which when wet can be easily shaped into any form. Different types of clay which are sourced from different regions have their own unique features which affects the durability and the final appearance of the ceramic piece. Some clays are ideal for creating plates and bowls while some are pottery only used for display purposes.
Like any other crafting process, in pottery, the first step is to gather and prepare the clay. One may have to get rid of all unwanted substances out of the clay and mix water along with other elements to achieve the perfect blend. The initial, Once completed, the clay can be molded through a variety of techniques which include hand shaping, using a potter’s wheel or slip casting. Each method offers a different set of ways to form it into a stunning masterpiece or a simple molded piece.
Clay is first molded into a specific structure, shaped, and then inserted into a kiln to fire, starting off with a process of Multiple firing. The first one is called the bisque firing, which is used to solidify the shape of the Clay. Firing marks the preliminary steps of production, where it is undertaken to metalize the clay and apply glaze on the surface for the final finishing. After bisque firing glazes are put on glaze fired pieces, then a second one is performed to combine the two. Final touches help in getting the intermediate stage from rough functional product into much more appealing and at the same time durable one.
Human beings have produced pottery for various purposes, for instance, people used to use ceramic objects for cooking and saving food ect, but most importantly it was subconsciously used for showcasing social class within society. Some products were modeled only for show purposes, since their appearance is truly eye catching, but now modern society is capable of appreciating fine art so no object goes unappreciated, it’s worth highlighting that workshops now days are much more progressive than their ancestors and have tried and tested techniques to create new pieces of art instead of reproducing them.
